The Benzie Area Historical Society will be offering two free workshops focusing on historic homes on Friday, August 5. “Respectful Rehabilitation of Your Historic House” will be presented from 9:00 a.m.-noon, and “If These Walls Could Talk: Researching Your Historic House” from 1:00-4:00 p.m. The workshops are presented by the Historical Society of Michigan. Cheri LaFlamme Szcodronski, Firefly Preservation Consulting, will lead the rehabilitation workshop and teach participants how to renovate their own historic homes. She will guide historic homeowners on how to retain their home’s timeless beauty and to take advantage of new preservation tax credits. Robert Myers, Historical Society of Michigan, will lead the research workshop. Participants will learn how to uncover house histories, including who built them and when, their architectural styles, and the stories of the families who called them home. After that, he’ll guide them on what to do with that information. “The Benzie Area Historical Society’s research team frequently receives requests to research local historical homes,” says Barb Mort, executive director. “Our goal is to empower members of our community to conduct research and build their knowledge and personal archives using local resources and primary sources.”The workshops will be offered at the Benzie Area Historical Museum, 6941 Traverse Avenue, Benzonia.
